speaking your truthI had a great chat with my therapist the other night.

That’s right. David Wygant goes to a therapist sometimes.

Why?

Because it’s a place for me to vent, let go, to get it all out, and to speak my truth. You see, I come from a family of skeptics. My Mom and Dad were both skeptics. When I was growing up, we didn’t really talk openly about anything. My Mom and I would have long conversations sometimes but they were always just between the two of us.

We learn our communication skills from our parents, but we need to change and develop them as we grow into adults. We need to learn how to express our feelings, desires, and our true selves. I don’t know why we have so much trouble communicating, because in reality all we want as humans is the truth.

In any relationship, business or personal, we need to have the truth to have a relationship that works and is satisfying. But here’s the paradox…

We dread communicating with each other, because even though we want the truth, we’re afraid to hear it in case it isn’t what we want to hear.

Isn’t life about speaking the truth every day? So why are we so full of tension and apprehension when we communicate?

You need to practice talking. Write down what you would say to everyone in your life if you had the opportunity. Let’s say for instance you had one more day to live. You have one more day alive on this planet, and you were able to have an open, heartfelt communication with everyone in your life.

What would you say to your boss?

What would you say to your girlfriend or boyfriend?

What would you say to your parents?

What would you say to your best friend?

If this was your last day on the planet, your last day to be able to express yourself in the ways you need to express yourself, what would you say to them in those moments?

Think about that, and starting having those conversations one by one, because in life, we never know when our last day is going to be. Why would you leave a conversation about how you feel on the table?

It’s so important to get all that stuff out, because you’ll feel so much better. Your relationships will be better, and the happier your heart will feel. Good communication eliminates stress, anxiety, and teaches you to have real, authentic, honest connections.
