What’s the one truth about life?
The one thing that is consistent, no matter what?
The one thing that drives all of us nuts in life?
You know what that one truth is?
You will never know what another person is thinking.
And yet we spend countless hours a week, countless hours a day, thinking and speculating what someone else is thinking or why they’re doing something.
We play the speculation game non-stop in life.
I don’t know what it is, but it makes us feel better. What are they thinking? What do they want? Why are they doing this? How can they do this?
What are they really thinking about this, what, what, why, why?
It’s crazy, but we play the speculation game non-stop in life.
Here’s the one truth about life:
You will never know what someone else is thinking, so don’t ask me.
Don’t ask me when I’m coaching you what you think the person is thinking or doing.
I don’t know.
You never know what someone’s motives are until you ask them what their motives are and that’s where clear defined conversation skills come in.
Imagine just having the power to just ask somebody, what are you thinking?
Getting on the phone instead of speculating.
How many times have you sat down with your friend and you played the speculation game, wondering what somebody was up to. What they were thinking. Why they were doing what they were doing.
Instead of asking them why.
If you think about it, we’ve been trained to speculate our entire life.
We do it in sports.
It’s great to speculate. What if Peggy had the ball? What if they hand it off.
Do you remember the Super Bowl?
Why didn’t they give the ball to Marshawn Lynch at the one yard line?
How long did we speculate about what Pete Carol, his offensive coordinator, was thinking that day, that night.
How could they have lost the Super Bowl!?
We speculate non-stop in sports all the time.
We speculate in romance. We’re wondering what they were thinking. You thought you connected with somebody. You wonder why they’re not getting back to you. Why are they not calling you back. You speculate all the reasons why.
We drive ourselves nuts thinking about that.
We do it non stop.
And I don’t know about you, but I’m fucking tired of the speculation game.
I’m fucking tired of it. I’m tired of playing games, I’m tired of hiding behind things that may or may not happen.
The key to life is communication, not speculation.
