No, I didn’t turn into Huey Lewis and the News all of a sudden, but I’ve got to admit, that song was good.
Let’s talk about love today.
The power of love.
We are all either in love or searching for love.
I was in Raleigh, North Carolina recently. I did a talk with a tobacco company on communication and how to be a master effective communicator in your business life.
This is another side of my business that I love. So shoot me an email if you have a corporate event and want me to speak about becoming a masterful, effective communicator.
When I was in Raleigh I was walking around. It’s a quaint city. To me, it felt like a little town. I felt like I was in a small town. Don’t forget that I’m a little tainted.
I have spent the majority of my life in New York City and Los Angeles, so I’m used to big places with lots of people.
While I was walking around I met a conservative southern gentleman. A great guy, with awesome dogs. We started talking about love. It seems to be a subject that always follows me, wherever I go.
We were talking about his relationship with his wife
He’s 28, entrepreneurial, owns his own clothing store, and he told me something that I thought everybody should hear. He said “my wife and I over communicate.”
I said there’s no such thing as over communicating.
He said “we literally talk about everything, all the time. I go out with my friends and she knows exactly who I’m with and exactly what I do. We talk about everything that’s going on with our lives.”
I looked at this young 28 year old man and said “that’s the woman you’re going to be with for a long, long time. You’re probably going to have what I call the power of love for the rest of your lives.”
Over communication is a beautiful thing.
There is no such thing as over communicating.
Couples that last, couples that really have love, have an opportunity to communicate about everything.
You see, love is not just about boinking each other’s brains out.
Love is all about communication and friendship.
We talked some more. He said “I’ve got an easy life. Some of my friends have hard lives.” I said “a hard life is not a good life.”
Why should love be a struggle? Why do we need to struggle to be with the person we love.
He said, “you know, some of my friends, they just have this hard love. They’re constantly fighting with their wives, constantly arguing all the time. Everything is a battle.”
I have had those relationships. They don’t serve me well at all. I’m not looking to battle, nor do I want to battle with anybody on a daily basis, whether it’s in a love relationship or friendship relationship.
Love should be easy.
It should be something that just flows. Of course there are going to be challenges. There is no perfect relationship and of course there are going to be times of tension. There are going to be times when you disagree.
But love doesn’t have to be a battle, a daily battle. I think it was Pat Benatar’s song back in the ’80’s, Love Is A Battlefield.
It doesn’t have to be a battlefield.
Love should be somewhere you can get lost, which brings us to another song, Lost In Love, by Air Supply.
I can quote love songs from here to the end of time, but true love, amazing love, and amazing relationships, are something that just flow even during controversial times.
The key to love for my new 28 year old friend, Roley Prends, is communication.
The communication of love is something that I have learned to work on.
It’s all about the Love Blueprint seminar that I do a couple of times a year at the beginning of each year. Look for it soon. I’ll be posting the dates in the next couple of days.
Love doesn’t need to be a battlefield.
