The One Thing That Will Screw Up Any Date

Have you ever been on a date and the other person’s phone goes off? You watch them as they start having a Pavlovian moment.
They start twitching.
Their hand gets a little shaky; they’re antsy because they’re not touching the beautiful, hard, shiny screen of their iPhone.
You know what’s coming next: the end of the date. They’re about to look at you and say something like, “Do you mind if I look to see who that is? I’m expecting an important call.”
Boom!
You’re not important; your time is not important. They basically just devalued you and everything that you’re about.
Choosing the Phone Over the Person in Front of You
This happens all the time. People are constantly out on dates staring at their phones. No matter where you go, no matter what you do, you can go anywhere – bars, restaurants, coffee shops, the movies – and count people sitting there staring at their phones.
It doesn’t matter if they’re on a date, or at a family dinner, or out with friends.
Their phone is obviously more important. They might as well be dating Siri.
Are You One of These People?
I want you to do a little experiment today, and I think it will really blow you away.
I want you to walk around and look at all the people who are sitting opposite somebody else or sitting with a group, and I want you to start counting the amount of groups that have at least one person on their phone compared to the amount of groups or dates where the people are not on their phones. Instead, they are actually having conversations with each other.
I think you will be pretty surprised; it will blow you away.
Don’t Let Your Phone Screw Up Any Date
I see it nonstop. My daughter and I will go out and actually document it when we see this happening. I like to shoot a little bit of b-roll once in a while. My daughter will look at me and say, “Daddy, they’re on their phones; get the camera out.”
She sees it every single day. And this is a major problem for kids. It’s a problem that many of you don’t even see, aren’t even aware of. When you’re constantly on your phone, texting, emailing, Googling, whatever you’re doing instead of actually having a conversation with the person you’re spending time with, your kids are seeing how disconnected you are. And, you’re setting up a whole different precedent for relationships for them. They’ll think it’s okay to go out with somebody and ignore them by sitting there on their phone.
Do you do this? Do you have friends who do this? It’s time to start thinking about this. If you’re on a date and can’t put the phone away while you’re with that person, they’re not going to want to go out with you again. That’s probably the only date you’re going to have with that person, and it will probably be a short one.
Check out today’s video, and take a look at how this number one mistake will continue to screw up any date over and over again.
