Remember when we were younger how simple it was to have a relationship?

The other day I was talking to a friend of mine, and I started thinking, man it used to be so easy. There were no complications, no fears, no stories. It was almost like you stumbled upon a relationship.

One day you were thinking about how you wanted a boyfriend. The next thing you know, you’re on your way to class, and all of a sudden you bump into something, or someone. Two weeks later, you’re boyfriend and girlfriend, without any of the hang ups, without any of the adult issues.

How many more conversations do we need to have as adults talking about the fears we have?

Why are we so fearful as a society?

Why is it such a challenge for us to connect and to get into a relationship?

It’s because adults are so fucked up.

We’re all so scared. It has to be perfect. It has to be right. We don’t want to make the same mistakes again.

We’ve been injured. We’ve been hurt before. How many times have you told yourself this? How many times have you sat around in a group session with all your friends on a Sunday afternoon, having brunch, talking about this stuff? Non-stop.

It used to be we would meet. Boy meets girl. Boy courts girl. In a shy way, girl would pick up on all the things boy was doing and the two of them would jump headfirst into a relationship.

It was so innocent and so beautiful. It would be this amazing thing that started to grow because there was no fear around it.

Sure, it was tough to let go at times. But we were so naive that we just did it. We didn’t outthink ourselves. We didn’t go deep into conversation about why we can’t do it or how we should do it.

We didn’t need to feel so fucking safe all the time.
