I actually DO believe that your job has everything to do with your power. Powerful men have powerful jobs, it comes naturally. If you work at Wal Mart, and provided you are not the store manager, you are by definition not powerful.

Peter, I agree with you for the most part. Except I don't think Wal-mart store manager is high enough up the chain to be considered "powerful". A Wal-mart corporate executive, or an actual member of the Walton family maybe. The store manager might be seen as powerful by the uglier, fatter, low level women working at the store. Not so much by the more attractive women. Besides corporate executives, (vice presedent of the company, and up) there are other jobs seen as powerful. Cops are seen as powerful. (obvious) Club bouncers are powerful. (They bounce the shit out of people ) . Doctors are powerful. (They are seen as having the power of life and death.) Entrepreneurs who run SUCCESSFUL businesses are powerful. (They are the REAL risk takers. Ex. David.) There are others.

John, the Wal Mart store manager might have been the wrong example, but you are absolutely right about (most) of the other ones. Except for cops: most, if not all, cops I know are married to average women at best. Attraction is very closely related to the amount of money you make, and cops usually don't make that much... But I can tell you what is a whole lot more attractive than any of that stuff. I saw it again today at the gym: a guy flirting with a woman...that attracts all the other women. They get really competitive.

I believe in "styles" of leadership. Say... using dance for an example... One can possess the chest-thumping gyrating raw selfish power of a Travolta or Swaysee (Saturday Nite Fever & Dirty Dancing). Typically, these men just use the babes to to show off their dance prowess. Contrast the above style, to that of the dance instructor in the 2006 movie "Take The Lead". Paraphrasing the instructor: A man ALWAYS leads the woman in the journey of the tango-- GENTLY yet FIRMLY !! She TRUSTS HIS LEAD by accepting his invitation to dance by offering her hand. When the dance ends, she has no regrets... Personally, i feel more comfortable expressing the latter leadership style.

There is a lot of basis to what you're saying, jr. Insider tip from someone who's been obsessed about swing dancing lately: For men, there are TWO ways to stand out as a dancer. One is to be flashy and have a lot of moves / technical skills. You will notice these guys stand out pretty easily. The Travolta type as you say. But the OTHER way to stand out is to have a very clear strong lead. You won't be able to see these guys stand out as easily. BUT believe me, women like this kind of dancer best and word will get around if you are one of them.

I'd have to agree with David on this one. Power has absolutely nothing to do with your job. It's how you RESPOND to anything that has arrived in your life is what makes you confident and powerful. It's learning how to control your emotions, and presence in ANY situation. That's what makes you powerful. Your job doesn't make who you are. It's your mindset, commitments, and presence with yourself and others. And how much you love yourself.

I get the jist of the message, but this is always my biggest struggle when considering beginning a relationship. You talk about being this big powerful confident leader... who always tells the women where the dates are happening, what's going to happen, setting the sexual tone etc... and i can't help but feel like I'd be treating the women like a pet. If I was dating a girl whom I felt like I was "leading" all the time, I'd probably get very irritated with her, with how weak and empty she seems as a person. I'd love her less and less, while fucking her, and I'd probably be tempted to cheat. I don't want to be in front of, or in back of anyone. I want someone I can be WITH. I expect just as much happiness and fulfillment (sp?) from her as I plan on giving back. I want a girlfriend, an equal, human girlfriend. If I wanted something to love and lead I'd go adopt a cat from the animal shelter.

Bobby M, very good point. This whole 'lead' issue is a very subtle thing. You can't really try to boss a woman around that much, she will get annoyed quickly. I think what David is referring to are just the beginning stages of the relationship, you have to create some mystery and intrigue, and for sure show her that SHE won't stand a chance of bossing YOU around. I think that is the biggest turnoff for a woman...

I think what David was saying was that a job in itself is not what makes a man powerful (although as the first commenter said there is likely to be an incidental correlation between personal and professional power). But maybe the Walmart shelf stacker does not get his sense of purpose from his job. He can still be powerful in the way he operates. He could still dominate his social circle. Maybe his purpose in life is to seduce women and he just has a job to live on and have an apartment. Maybe he is a musician or writer. Similarly, top executives are not always naturally dominant men. For a start dominant men often piss people off which can damage career prospects

Haha, let's get back to that thought experiment of having power over very powerful women, Melissa... So hypothetically speaking: what if a guy is very fun and playful and very good at handling you and engaging you, BUT technically speaking you could overpower him because oh say you work out religiously and are navy trained to kick ass or something of that sort? Could you still be attracted to the guy? Don't laugh, I've met several women like that believe it or not. Guess I have a weakness for manly chicks. It's a bad habit, I know, but I digress. IN GENERAL you are totally right though. It's a very safe bet that raw physical strength IS a power I have over a woman, and if I have that power I should wield it gratuitously. But what if the woman is some kind of competitive athlete or I am some scrawny computer nerd? Intellect is like that too. IN GENERAL I could flaunt that power over a woman. BUT what if she is an inventor or iPhone app developer or rocket scientist? Which brings me back to the original point: I think PLAYFULNESS, and generally acting like Wygant, is the best way to have power over a woman because those would work even if she can match or outmatch me in every other way.

Well Melissa, I can't beat the rapist up if I'm changing my tampon! Seriously what I'm trying to get at is, I feel like a lot of women really reach when they're evaluating a man's manliness. Does anyone consider the actor Tom Hanks a masculine guy ?? I kinda admire his often overlooked style as a man. A lot of us refer to the Brad Pitts, or Russell Crowes as archetypes of manliness. Hanks seems down to earth and unassuming,however he's for most part in control of situations albeit in a laid back, chilled out, and sometimes humorous way... Also, take a look at the James Bond characters and George Clooney. The guys are portrayed as "Lone Ranger " types i.e. no employees to boss, not much cash, no gangs of friends etc. But... they women get women hot and bothered. To boot they have average looks, E.G. Daniel Craig. Man... sometimes i don't get it...

Here's a contrast in power of seduction. I met 2 men (separately). Both looked so similar that they could've been twins. I wasn't really attracted to either, but I was in desperate mode on both occasions. Only one of them seduced me. One was a formerly a current governor's staff member no, but now a wealthy, and highly-connected lobbyist. The other is a well-paid, highly skilled blue collar worker. The lobbyist told me about how he could whisk me off for a romp in Miami. The blue collar worker regaled me with stories of the crazy traffic on the street near the coffee shop. Who's power was more successful in seducing me and why? I know you weren't thinking there'd be a test, but don't worry, I grade on a curve.

I agree with Bob - you're being WAY too easy Sarah. First of all without knowing anything else the answer has to be the blue collar guy. Because if it weren't your story would have a rather weak climax, no? Guess what guys I went with the rich and powerful guy. surprise! Second of all the lobbyist gave all his power away to you by inviting you to a vacation without you having to earn it by working up to it, and also by talking from the position of HIM qualifying himself to YOU. Plus he tried to woo you with wealth and status. If he could woo you more cheaply by using his personality, he would probably do that instead. But he did not. The blue collar guy just opened up and shared a personal story. Now if he complained about traffic in the tone of a whining negative nancy, the answer would probably be you picked door #3, but I assume he did it in a fun and engaging way that got you to open up too. So, where do I fit in on your curve? How many standard deviations am I away from the mean? I assume of course that like the curves of most naturally occurring random variables yours is bell shaped? I.e. with a prominent hump in the middle and a powerful drop around the outsides?

Hey Erick, I can relate to you on this one! I broke up with a girl at 17, that I had a major crush because I was lacking in confidence in myself, and rather than being honest about it, I feared being dumped in front of my friends, so I ended the relationship because of my ego. All I can say to you is, take the time out for yourself, find what makes you tick, and keep working with David's stuff and things will work out for you! :) I'm now twenty, and have a solid foundation of confidence that I never had before, and have developed my social skills so I'm comfortable going over and meeting new people during the course of the day.

For me job really isn't an indicator of a man being powerful or not..Its all in their masculine energy..The more masculine a man is, the more feminine I can feel being in his presence and just relax and "be" and feel protected.. I do see to point about men sometimes feeling wary of coming off as too controlling with their masculine energy. Further on in dating or a relationship, if it is because you want to please the girl by getting her opinion for example on what to do on your next date, it is fine to give her options to choose or getting her input.. There will always be a sort of dance between the both of you and the two energies. (masculine & feminine) The ideal is for men to be mainly in their masculine energy..

Bobby M, Rather emotional aren't we? I'm simply sharing my perspective like always. Bragging is beneath me. And, like DW, I want every man on this site to be sucessful with women, not just me. Most women I've dated and converse with want the type of man that DW is describing. Not all of course. A minority want a more neutral relationship. They're more like friends than lovers, and things are equal across the board. They don't experience the high voltage of attraction and sparks with one another, but things are more stable, calm, etc. One author I highly respect says that these type of relationship make up about 20% of love relationships. However, I'm highly attracted to women that own their feminine qualities. They make me melt. They make me want to frequent the gym. They inspire me. They make me want to become a better man. The type of women I'm into are turned on by the man that DW describes in the podcast. I've decided that I want to deal with these type of women, so I conduct myself in a way they find attractive. I have no problem with that. Feels natural to me actually.

I occasionally work with a guy whom I would describe as utterly arrogant, selfish, cocky, and ruthless. That doesn't keep the women away, to the contrary. Well, Techno...though I workout daily I am not stronger than most men and I would be really turned off dating a guy I could beat at arm wrestling. I want to be pinned down sometimes, you know. I kind of like a bit of breathless struggle. Maybe that's because it's FAR more likely that I will meet a man who has physical power over me. I've only met 2-3 men in my life who have had true intellectual power that exceeds my own. So? All I need is a guy who isn't going to be bent about my smarts, but brings the power in other ways. Physically, usually. I also like guys who have 'power over environment'...meaning they can build, sculpt, fix, etc. That's a manly power that I will concede.

Well, Melissa, if you're right that would dent my playfullness-trumps-all working theory. And also put professional bodybuilders and competitive fighters squarely outside of my dating league :( No loss in the case of bodybuilders, but dang, I do have a weakness for a woman who can kick ass. That's about as sexy as a man who can cook and clean! It took me almost three decades to figure this out, but: yes, the #1 most important thing for me is that a partner can keep up activity wise. Having a mind that's sharp enough to cut glass is a nice bonus, but turns out it's not a requirement. I can see myself having a meaningful relationship with a fitness instructor half my intelligence, but not with a brilliant couch potato. And if I were to expect both, no one would be good enough for me either and I would just go crazy from frustration. I'm afraid I'd pull a Melissa :(. No, please, I don't want to pull a Melissa :(. Uh oh, what if I pull Melissas too? I DO tend to set the bar pretty damn high... P.S I think you were right about Michigan Girl ;)

Did you guys ever notice that (provided you do travel) in most other countries, the roles of females and males are a lot stronger defined than in North America, or Western Europe ? You don't even have to go that far - Mexico for you US people, Greece or Spain for me. Over there, males are males, and females are females. I am not really sure where that started, but it seems to me that in our so-called modern societies, we are almost ashamed of showing our masculinity, or our femininity. It's not a good thing...

Ah, Boy....maybe I am frustrated because of my expectations... I've tried not having any. That's been my entire life...to not have any expectations from men. But that doesn't work. Because no matter how hard I try, I cannot convince myself that what I want out of a relationship is beyond difficult to find. Didn't work my entire marriage. I always wanted more. Because what I want is simple. Just a dude who is my equal or better. And it's not like I was hatched from a Faberge egg. I am from regular peeps. There should be a man out there who is fun, sexy, smart and gainfully employed who isn't a freaking whack job. I mean, I exist...I am not one of a kind. A guy like myself should exist too. I approach this like I approach any new technical innovation. I see a technology I like, let's say on a coffee machine...and I want to use that technology to innovate a line of thermometers. I see it in front of me and I know I can tweak it into something new to suit my needs. Because it already exists. So funny, I am going to get my tubes tied tomorrow. For real. And I keep getting panicky fits of irony thinking my story will go ".....and she never got laid again."

I learned a lot about the friendzone by watching my brother when he was a teen and young adult. As a bystander it was painful to watch. It got so bad that a professor actually threatened to fail my brother and his girl "friend" because she kept passing notes to him and distracting him. I was in the same class and dreamed of strangling both with my bare hands. The professor actually lectured him about not getting into the friendzone. My brother came to his senses. He actually asked the girl out, she turned him down (she had a boyfriend, which he already knew). He never went into the friendzone again. The professor's still around if you need help, by the way. Consider the rejection you get when a girl turns you down to be an injection to make you stronger the next time you ask another girl out. If you don't take the injection, you will get infected in the friendzone and you will experience prolonged suffering. (Sorry for the clumsy analogy).

Well, in private, women women want a guy with those qualities David described AND a great job. Saying that your job doesn't matter is just not based on reality. Women would like all of the above, but what often happens is a guy with all those qualities are hard to find....so they end up having to figure out what they can put up with or go for the most. I had a high school friend. The guy's built like an adonis...even did really well with girls in high school. But, I told him repeatedly to go to a 4 year university instead of a community college. He would never listen and he's pretty much had problems after high school.
