Have you ever met the exaggerator?
You know, the person that just magnifies everything they do?
You could be looking for dinner with them, walking around. Trying to find a cute place to eat for maybe 20 minutes, and the exaggerator will say this:
“We’ve been walking around for hours. When are we going to eat?”
The exaggerator will also do other things that will drive you nuts. They will tell you that they’ve done something ‘one million or two million times’, when they’ve only done it five times.
They’ll tell you that they’ve been working on something for hours upon hours, when in reality they’ve only been doing it for 20 minutes.
Why do people exaggerate?
If you confront the exaggerator, the exaggerator will tell you that it’s just the way they talk and do things.
But in reality, I think the exaggerator is trying to elicit an emotion out of you. I think the exaggerator is trying to get you to feel for them. The exaggerator has a subtle “poor me” attitude.
This friend of mine was married to the exaggerator. Recently, they split, and the exaggerator has been exaggerating in double time now.
They share a bunch of kids together. Sometimes the exaggerator says they have 10 kids instead of 3 kids, because that’s the way the exaggerator sees it.
I think if Seinfeld was still around, they’d do an entire episode on The Exaggerator.
Maybe I’ll write Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm and see whether he wants to do an episode on The Exaggerator.
. . .
Larry David is one of my all-time favorite people.
Who are some of your favorite people?
I’ve coined the term “the exaggerator”, so it’s all mine. But if you were to create an episode on a similar personality trait, what would you call yours?
