Are You a Follower or Leader?

I often get questions about what a leader is.
To me it’s pretty obvious:
Followers will follow, leaders will lead.
You ever go out with a group of people and you don’t want to be there anymore?
You’re just not in the mood for the night, not in the mood for what they want to do next, maybe not in the mood to drink, maybe not in the mood to eat the food that they want to eat. But yet, you go along with it anyway.
I don’t go along with it.
Some of you right now are thinking, “Maybe David’s not a good friend…”
No, no, no. I sign up for part one of every single evening or social event. It doesn’t mean I’ve signed up for the whole night.
If I agree to meet somebody for coffee or if I agree to meet somebody for drinks or if I agree to meet somebody for dinner, it doesn’t mean that I agree to be with them the whole night.
I don’t know how the dinner’s going to go, how the coffee’s going to go, how the tea is going to go.
But what I do know is that I have agreed to one part of the evening. If I no longer want to be with that person anymore, I’m not going to continue the night. I don’t care if they’re going to meet up with a group of people—peer pressure never worked on me.
I do what I want, I say what I want, and I have fun. I’d rather leave wanting more of someone. I then find them a lot more fun and a lot more interesting.
So you’ll always see me cutting out, the first to leave a dinner, the first to leave a party, the first to leave a night out. I hit my threshold and I go.
It’s not that I don’t like my friends, I just don’t feel like having the night go on anymore. I’m not there to be dragged from party to party. I don’t find that fun. I’m not there to be dragged from bar to bar, I don’t find that fun. I like to go out for a couple hours and talk, hang out, and that’s about it. And then I’m done.
I’ve found that people want more of you when you do that. Not only that, you are just a leader, not a follower.
A leader will always lead, a follower will always follow.
So the next time you’re out and the whole group just wants to keep going out and you don’t want to, you know what I strongly suggest you do. I strongly suggest you do whatever you want. Because once again, leaders lead, followers follow.
There’s no reason for you to follow at all, at all.
Don’t do it.
Do you.
