I honestly don’t get it. We seem to live in the MUSA – The Mediocre United States of America.
OK my European readers. You’re not getting off the hook because you’re just as bad. I don’t understand why, but it seems some people love mediocrity. They like to settle for it. They’re happy to settle for mediocre lives. The other day we were re-doing some writing for a piece I was doing, and one of my team members emailed me saying, “Hey, why are we doing this again? I thought it was already approved?”
He was right. The piece had been approved, but after reviewing it I realized it was mediocre and needed more work. The only way you can learn is to improve at what you do. I don’t understand why people are happy with mediocre lives. Here are 3 reasons why I hate mediocrity so much!
1. We Get One Shot At Life!
We’re only here once as far as we know. Why would you want to live a mediocre life? Why would you settle with a woman you don’t want to be with? Why would you settle for a job you don’t really like? Why would you hang out with friends who don’t excite you? Why live in a place you’re not really happy in? Why? Why? Why?
Each moment only happens once. Are you really okay with just being average? I hope not. I hope that’s why you’re here right now.
2. It’s Just Laziness
If you’re happy with mediocre you’re lazy. It’s that simple. Admit the fact. You’re lazy. Change is too hard for you. Change scares the hell out of you. Change bothers you so much you’d rather be mediocre. Go ahead. Admit it. Not everyone can be amazing and great, because it’s too hard for most people.
But don’t you want to be one of the few and not one of the many?
Which leads me to number 3.
3. It’s Just Excuses
Mediocrity is for people who don’t want to try. It’s for people who don’t want to change. They get inundated with changes they want to make and end up not making any of them. Change is a challenge. It always has been. The first thing necessary for change is, discomfort. Who wants to be uncomfortable?
When you make changes you sometimes face criticism. Criticism destroys your ego because you’re ego led. Mediocre people are led by their egos. Makes more sense, doesn’t it? How could a mediocre person have a big ego?
Well, of course they can. Mediocre people will always get insulted whenever somebody criticizes them, or tells them they have a mediocre life. To me, change is invigorating. Change is enlightening. Change is one of the most beautiful things that can happen on a daily basis. I like to change every single day. Bring it on. Bring on the change. Bring on differences in life. Bring on the challenges.
I don’t settle for mediocrity. Never have, never will, never want to. That’s why I really get angry when people are mediocre. If you want to live a better life, I strongly suggest make a decision to not be mediocre anymore. It’s a decision. It’s a decision we all can make. Make that decision today because you’ll only regret it down the line!
