We’ve heard the term before, “life is not a dress rehearsal.”
Yet, it seems like so many of you live life like it’s a dress rehearsal for something else.
There’s a great movie from the late 80’s called Defending Your Life with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep.
The basic premise of it is, there’s a man who lives thinking about everything. Every move he makes, he overanalyzes.
He rehearses things before he goes to them.
He makes mistakes along the way, and lives a very cautious life.
He dies, and he goes to this way station, where he has to defend his life, where he thinks it’s about defending his life. It’s one of the best movies ever made for people to think life is in their heads.
This is no dress rehearsal. You never know when you’re going to pass over, you never know when you’re going to die, you never know when you’re going to go somewhere else.
Yet so many people live their life in their heads.
They go out on a Friday or Saturday night and they see someone they’re attracted to, and they get into their heads right away. Immediately, they start thinking about what they could say or what they should say, and then they say nothing.
The opportunity, like many other opportunities in their life, passes them by. They go home and overanalyze.
They think about what they could say or what they should say. They plan it out in their head: what they’re going to say next time. They know exactly how it’s going to go down.
There are so many people who spend so much time thinking about their mistakes that they’ve made. The mistakes that they’ve made in business and relationships.
I get at least one e-mail a day from somebody who talks about an ex-relationship, where they blame themselves for everything that went wrong.
That to me is ridiculous, because she didn’t do wrong in a relationship. Period. There are two people in it, so they were equally responsible.
In life, it’s about doing something everyday that scares you. Otherwise, you’re never going to grow. So think about today. What is the scariest thing you can do?
Is it talking to a member of the opposite sex that you’re attracted to?
Is it asking your boss for a raise?
Just having the discussion with your partner about how you really feel about the way they behave or things that they might do? Discussing your trigger points. There are so many things. We can do the list for hours and hours and hours. I think you get my point.
Doing something every single day that scares you will hopefully prevent you from going up in the sky one day and defending your life.
This is no dress rehearsal. You’re not going to have a second chance as you.
Whether you believe in reincarnation or your soul comes back or whatever it might be, this is your journey as whoever you are right now.
So you’re going to sit back and constantly think: can you be in your head and not take any risks at all? You’re going to miss life, because life doesn’t wait for anybody. Life just passes you by. That’s how it works. You’ll never get time back. So start doing something everyday that scares you.
