Let’s be open and honest today.
How many of you are proud that you’re perfectionists?
You’ll even take Meyer Briggs tests and find out that you’re a certain personality type. One that is all about being perfect.
How many times have people argued with you and they’ve accused you of being perfect?
How many times have you been in your head so much that you can’t do something unless you feel like you’ve done it 100% right?
Perfectionism is the number one disease out there and it kills all confidence.
I’ll tell you why.
The more you think, the more you mentally masturbate, the less chance you’re actually going to do something.
First off, there is no definition of perfection. Nothing is perfect. Look around. Go to a car. Go to a new car lot and take a look at all the new cars.
Ones that have never been driven.
You’ll be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t have a bird poo stain on the paint.
A minor nick from the lot boy who wasn’t cautious enough.
There’s going to be some flaw, even in that perfect new car.
Take a look at a pair of jeans or a sweater. There’s always going to be a stitch that’s off in one way or another. The world is round and it’s full of imperfection. Life is full of imperfection. And yet, we’ve been brought up by society and school to get perfect, straight As. How many times did you hear that when you were growing up as a kid?
My son is a perfect straight A student, drilled in your brain. Score good on those SATs, become successful.
Perfectionism is the number one confidence killer because the things that you don’t excel at are the things you need to try. And the things that you need to try are going to make your life more balanced. So, what happens is this: because you’re such a perfectionist in areas of your life, you’ll tend not to try the things you actually need to do.
I can’t begin to tell you the amount of men I have coached over the years that won’t go and approach a woman until they get it perfectly right. There is no perfectly right. Even when I go and I talk to a woman, I say the dumbest things in the world. So be it. I’m a flawed human being. There is nothing perfect about me at all.
A lot of you won’t go to the beach until you’ve got your perfect beach bod.
A lot of you won’t turn in a project or start a business until it’s absolutely the perfect time.
You’re waiting for the perfect time, the perfect moment to do so many things in your life and what that does is kill confidence.
The only way you’re ever going to be confident in life is to actually try things out.
Life is a series of trials and errors until you get it, well, as right as possibly can. Then, when you have it right, you’ll find out that you still need to tweak and work on things.
No one will ever have the perfect body. Everybody has a flaw.
There’s no such thing as a perfect relationship. There’s going to be conflict, arguments, and fights.
There’s no perfect business, no perfect way to make money. No perfect ice cream sundae because even that perfect ice cream sundae will have chocolate dripping onto your hands. Because if it was perfect, it wouldn’t leak.
There’s no perfect movie. There’s a flaw in every single movie.
There’s no perfect road that’s ever been built. There’s no perfect tree. Even in nature, everything has an imperfection. But, yet, life needs to go on.
Your perfectionism is the worst confidence killer for you. It’s the thing that’s actually stopping you from getting your life going.
