On Screen Romances
By David Wygant
Have you ever felt like Lloyd Dobler? You meet somebody, you fall in love, she’s absolutely perfect for you . . . and you do not know what to do.
Now, granted, the days of walking around with a boom box over our head blaring Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” is no longer practical. Then again, you can grab an iPod and some minispeakers and blare that music. It just won’t have as strong of a visual effect as Lloyd Dobler had in “Say Anything.”
This blog is not about how to win her (or him) over with some last minute plot twist at the very, very end. This blog is all about what your favorite romantic comedy of all time is and why.
Now there are a few I really like. Nothing made me tear up more than Sam Wheat trying to communicate with Demi Moore through Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost.” That’s not much of a comedy though . . . I’d call it a romantic tragedy.
Here are some of my favorite movies and movie moments amongst the romantic comedies:
1. Patrick Dempsey in his pre-McDreamy days in “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
2. The scene between the two kids in “Superbad” when they were professing their male friendship love to each other.
3. Just about the entire movie “The Girl Next Door.”
4. I have to say that Ryan Reynolds was hilarious in “Just Friends.”
5. Bill Murray in “Stripes,” the scene with his girlfriend and the stove is an all-time favorite.
6. That mistaken first kiss in the movie “The Goonies” was great.
7. There was also really no better friendship between two misfits than between Sloth and Chunk in “The Goonies,” although I have to say that the friendship between ET and Elliot make “E.T.” one of the best buddy movies of all time.
8. Who can ever forget Long Duck Dong finally hooking up in “Sixteen Candles?”
9. The ultimate heartbreak in “Swingers” when John Favreau tortured that poor woman with the messages on her answering machine.
So what are your favorite on screen romances and on screen friendships? Also, if you had to watch one movie over and over again, what would it be?
